New to Skincare? Here’s How to Start Your Routine!

Choosing Your Skincare Routine With our besties recommending different skincare routines, deciding which one to follow can be challenging. Imagine heading towards the internet to look up what they suggested—only to have your head spinning because of information overload. In short, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with so many options.

But what if we tell you that caring for your skin doesn’t need to be all that complicated for it to be effective?

Keeping Your Routine Simple

Each of us is born unique. What skincare routine works for one person may not always work for another. With that in mind, we must first understand our skin’s characteristics and how it changes over time before we start doing any skincare practice. Much like choosing a dress for the occasion improves your fashion, adapting your skincare routine to your skin type does the same.

Dermatologists classify skin into four types:

  1. Dry Skin: It is characterized by skin that lacks hydration and leaves you with a dry, flakey sensation.

  2. Oily Skin: This skin type leaves you with shiny skin due to oil.

  3. Combination Skin: It is a combination of oily and flaky skin.

  4. Sensitive Skin: This skin type is frailer and will require extra attention to counter dryness.

Your Daily Skincare Routine

The basics of skincare revolve around the following steps.

  1. Cleanse: The ideal cleansing process is done twice—once in the morning and once in the evening. If you have oily skin, look for Cleansers that dissolve oil, whereas those with dry skin should opt for Cleansers that aid hydration.

  2. Moisturize: Moisturizers restore the water you lose during the day. Even if you have oily or combination skin, moisturizing is still important. A lack of moisture can drive your skin to produce more oil—leading to clogged pores.

  3. Applying Your Sunscreen: You always hear sunscreens when you head to the beach on sunny days. But in reality, it’s essential to wear sunscreen every day—even when it’s cloudy because UV Rays damage the skin during the day.

Be Consistent

It may all seem confusing at first, but don’t let all the information stress you. Stress affects your skincare, after all.

Also, note that skincare routines don’t work overnight. Aim to stay consistent for six to eight weeks to give your routine time to take effect, as this is the time it takes for your skin to regenerate new cells.

After you’re comfortable with the routine, you can do extra steps like applying toners and exfoliators—which we’ll get on with our future articles. However, if you’re interested in learning more about skincare, you can always visit Idara Aesthetics for consultations with our licensed dermatologists.
